Hi all, *SYSLOG SERVER/ANALYSIS* I have a Mac Mini witch hosts one website, so it's always on. Therefore I'd like to run a Syslog Server on it too, that will receive Syslog messages from my other Routers, NAS-units and so on. Anyone knows how to start Syslogd server on Mac to accept remote logging messages? I started Syslogd, but seems it doesn't accept remote messages. If I do a netstat -an it looks like udp port 514 is listening.

OR I have a ZyXEl NSA-220 Plus NAS, that already has a Syslog server built-in, and works. I've already tested it, and It receives messages from for example - my ADSL2 Router just fine. Ot creates files per day (as far as I can see, that looks like this: *Jan 26 04:50:45 192.168.0.1 08 user emerg [Internet connected] IP address: 172.22.124.97,* *Jan 26 04:50:47 192.168.0.1 08 user emerg [Internet connected] IP address: 95.166.254.33,* BUT what I'd really like is some tool, that will make me analyze this raw data better.

A Perhaps this is what a product like Kiwi does? But it seems to be a Windows tool, and I'd really love something that could either run as a Mac OS X app on my MacBook Pro here, and then access the syslog data when I launch the app. This may not be feasible, to load that much data every time, so is there something I can run on the OS X Server machine, that will load all the syslog data into a database (the built-in MySQL or some DB of it's own, and then let me analyze the data, see graphs and so on. Does this kind of thing exist, is there an Open Source solution (or free),. Well basically what do you hard-core server-dudes do? П™‚ Is this what Splunk is, and is it any good?

*LOAD TESTING A WEBSITE?*: How do I load-test my Mac Mini server from the outside, to see how much 'abuse' it can take? I don't mind paying a few bucks to be able to run a load-test once in a while, but I an't pay $50 or $500 or so every month/year, for something I only need once a month for example 🙂 OR can I install something on the OS X Server (or another machine inside my network) that will simulate a high-load on the server from the outside? Let me know any tips you guys have, and remember I'm not a company, just one person so FREE = GOOD for me, a few $ = fine, no problem but hundreds of bucks I just can't pay 🙂 PS: I know there is a Mac OS X app that can test and map ones network, complete with graphical maps showing where each machine and server is located in the building. I think it starts with 'Net.'

SYSLOG SERVER/ANALYSIS In a word: it may be overkill, and it takes a little configuration to get going, but it does near-real time analysis and reporting any any number of log files from any number of systems.

It's free for small volume (up to 500MB per day), but can run into some serious $$ if you're dealing with lots of logs (e.g. Hundreds of GB per day) LOAD TESTING A WEBSITE?: There are sites that can do this, but I wouldn't worry about it. Your server is not going to be your limit, it's far more likely to be your network bandwidth. Any Mac Mini is more than capable of saturating most internet links, unless you're in a commercial datacenter with gigabit uplinks to your upstream providers. I know there is a Mac OS X app that can test and map ones network, complete with graphical maps showing where each machine and server is located in the building I'm not aware of any app that can build a physical map of your network, since that requires an understanding of building layouts, etc., but logical maps (a list of all the devices on the network, switch ports, etc.) are easy enough.
